What is a Retcon?

Retcon means Retroactive Continuity.

A retcon is the alteration of facts or history stated in a piece of fiction. It can either be additional information or even an extreme change of information. Retcons commonly happen in comic books due the long history of characters especially those of mainstream brands. Retcons also happen on fictional materials that are episodic in nature, like Television shows, film sequels, video games, and even novels that are part of a series. In the case of comic books, issues are what we call the episodes.

Why Retcon? And… what’s with the Double N?

Well, retcons happen very frequently lately especially now that some comic brands rewrote the history of their universe after a major crossover event. Take for example DC, who solved most of their continuity issues with their latest effort called, Infinite Crisis. Also, most people don’t really know what’s going on with comic books right now, so everything they thought they knew about their favorite comic book character is now a retcon. Retcons can be good or bad but it really depends on the reader. We at Monthly Retconn neither support or dislike retcons. We just think that they are some things we can look back to and talk about it. The other N? oh, that’s just for kicks. You got a problem with that?

Meet the Most Wanted Man
posted by Bahoot Studios

It has recently announced that James McAvory was cast as Wesley Gibson the character created by Mark Millar and JG Jones on the graphic novel entitled WANTED. The movie is to be directed by Timur Bekmambetov and written by Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, who wrote Universal's "2 Fast 2 Furious." (Oh, dear GOD not them)

Wanted follows the journey of Wesley Gibson, who found out that he is the son of the world’s greatest assassin. He then pursues his father’s career in the world governed by super-villains.

The book itself is not a bad premise some comicbook readers even consider it as a must read but ultimately if this movie does push through I see no redeeming value for the characters, I hope they change the story because frankly in a world were the bad guys always win…I don’t think people would pay to see that because in THIS world bad guys more often than not, do win.

ULTIMATE AVENGERS 2: Rise of the Panther
posted by Bahoot Studios

Ok, it’s obvious; I don't like what they did with the ULTIMATES. I really, really liked the mature approach of MARK MILLAR to the characters in which he made them more contemporary and human. The animated version of ULTIMATES compromised so much of the story and the characters to make them more appeal to a larger audience. Although to their credit they did achieve their goal but on the other hand made me feel short change, but still no one can fully transcend from one medium to another without compromises, right?

The movie starts in Wakanda. They are celebrating the homecoming of their Prince T’Challa but aliens seem to have invaded the secluded city of Wakanda. So in retaliation the King dawned once more the Black Panther costume to protect its people but fails, costing him his life. T’Challa, the crowned Prince then assumes the role of King and sought Capt. American for aid in defeating the aliens.

This is the plot of the ULTIMATE AVENGERS 2 the sequel to the ULTIMATE AVENGERS direct to video movie. This movie is a sequel so it’s a MUST to watch the previous installment. Several character developments were evidently made in this movie as most sequels do, such developments are; the depression of Captain American, the erosion of the relationship of Giant Man and Wasp, the tackling of the Norse roots of Thor and Black Widow’s relationship with Steve Rogers. The movie hopes to continue the established events that had transpired during the first movie so in the sequel we see Bruce Banner behind bars due to his reckless actions as the HULK and the Chitauri’s larger plan for Earth.

Black Panther, the new character in the movie was obviously injected to the story purely for marketing purposes although the story placed him intrinsically in the middle of it all, I was more inclined for the writers to place in the earlier members of the Avengers such as Hawkeye, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Other first appearances were made in this movie such as the WAR MACHINE armor of Tony Stark. Other armors were briefly shown but only the WAR MACHINE model was worn by Stark.

It was satisfying that the movie created a story that smoothly connected the first movie to the next with no evident flaws. The characters’ progression from superheroes to human beings was well handled as compared to the caricature representation made in the previous installment. But still one can not help but compare it from the source material. As for its dramatic moments of the story, well, I don’t want to spoil anything but the story felt too rushed and was purely done for shock value. As a viewer I didn’t feel any connection with the characters with so little vest interest in them the sequences deemed important/dramatic was not given much importance.

On the animation, to its credit it has improved but not as grand as one might hope. The voice acting was great as usual but Olivia D’Abo seems to be trying even harder this time to create an artificial Russian accent that at times sounded too over the top.

The bottom line, this movie has something for the kids and fans alike but just keep an open mind and don’t be bother too much how the movie diverted so much from the source material, especially when Black Panther turns into an actual Panther or when spears are better than lasers.

5 out of 10.

Relax and enjoy the kid friendly movie.

Superman: Brainiac Attacks Review
posted by Bahoot Studios

God almighty we miss Paul Dini so much.

Yes, this movie was a disappointment but this is because it used the Dini/Timm designs of the Superman Animated Series and with most of its original cast returning but making the mistake of revamping the entire established continuity and create its own story. Everybody had high hopes for this movie and since it came out during the promotions for Superman Returns movie; fans were wishing they would be able to watch something new that is Superman related rather than replaying the damn Superman trailers but in the end…they were disillusioned and disappointed.

The movie was about the first encounter of Superman and Brainiac with a subplot of Clark’s struggle to keep his identity to Lois. It’s not the most complex or even original story for Superman but I do believe it was made as a fresher and child friendly approach to the franchise.

The voice acting was satisfying. It was nice to hear Timothy Daly as Superman again but having to hear the stupid lines of Lex Luthor and the unfamiliar voice of Brainiac made the experience not worth it.

The problem in this movie I believe is in the pre-production. In which rather than creating new designs for this animated movie they used the previous Superman Animated series designs. This made most people think it’s somewhat related or even connected to the previous series but in reality its not. I don’t really know if they were either cashing on the Superman Returns promotions or that they were trying to keep the budget low but after all has been said and done this animated movie seemed to hurt more the franchise than save money.

If they created new designs and promoted it as a NEW Superman Animated movie it could have a fighting chance and most people would even accept the characters different rendition.

It’s a 4 out of 10 for this movie.

I know it’s a little too late to review this book but since I currently bought it and with the new ULTIMATE AVENGERS 2 DVD already out, I would like to expound on the story the animated movie was loosely based on.

After the heroic rescue of the ULTIMATES from the rampage of the HULK, the city was slowly recovering but unknown to them a new ALIEN is coming their way. Fresh from the previous battle the team struggles to unite again with a little help from their new members namely Hawkeye, Black Widow, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

This is the first time the Chitauri was mentioned in the book. They are alien beings sent all over to initially “fix” the universe. During World War II, they allied with the Nazi’s to develop a super weapon but was eventually foiled by Captain America, but this battle left him in an ice prison which would be later found more than 50 years later.

The Chitaure is the ULTIMATE-ized version of the Skrulls. The use of these characters were a great move for Mark Millar in which he introduced established villains in the Marvel Universe in a more threatening and logical approach. The Chitaure helped tied the story of the previous story arc of Steve Rogers at the same time made readers aware of what Captain American is about.

Other new characters to the book are Hawkeye and Black Widow. Hawkeye as a character seemed to me as uninteresting, for me his like a rugged version of Captain America with arrows. It didn’t appeal to me that much. But Millar’s rendition of the character made him an essential character to the group. By highlighting that he is the only human soldier with no meta-human abilities in this superhuman team made him a grounding force to the high powered line up and the look Bryan Hitch created for him was a nice change from the violet pointy eared costume. Black Widow on the other hand is Russia’s answer to Captain America during the height of the Cold War. Widow for me is an under used character in the Marvel universe for obvious reasons since she was suppose to be created during the Cold War, her significance does dwindle down as time marches forward. But since she was used by Millar in the ULTIAMTES series, I think Marvel realized the potential of this character.

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, the children of Magneto were already introduced by the Millar during his run in the ULTIMATE X-MEN books. These characters were a great addition since they were part of Avengers during the early years in the original MARVEL UNIVERSE. In their ULTIMATE universe the mutant sibling were like Angelina Jolie and his brother during the rumors of their incestuous lifestyle. The ingenious dialogue written by Millar for these characters only further highlights their arrogance for being Mutant Supremacist.

The development of the characters was the most thrilling in this story arc for we follow the team as they further realize the consequences of their actions such as Hank’s regret towards beating his own wife to Roger’s John Wayne styled justice. This rich interaction of characters with current social problems is the strong point of the ULTIMATES books for it does not dumb down the reader but rather entices him/her to relate with the characters not as superheroes but rather as human beings.

The action sequences and the witty lines were always a thrill to read for you know your getting your money’s worth as Thor hammer’s down the alien spaceship or when Ironman/Tony Stark’s sharp quips.

Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch did a great job in this book, I do hope the next team Loeb and Madurera would do respect the books quality stories.

I give this book a 10 out of 10

Fantastic Four 2 gets new title.
posted by jepster2006

Just got this over the net from Cinescape.com

" According to Superhero Hype, the upcoming sequel to 20th Century Fox's FANTASTIC FOUR has received another title change.

The movie was previously known as Fantastic Four and The Silver Surfer, but will now be known as FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER. The second film, directed by Tim Story, is set to hit theaters on June 15, 2007.

In the sequel, the enigmatic, intergalactic herald, The Silver Surfer, comes to Earth to prepare it for destruction. As the Silver Surfer races around the globe wreaking havoc, Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben must unravel the mystery of The Silver Surfer and confront the surprising return of their mortal enemy, Dr. Doom, before all hope is lost.

Michael Chiklis, Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Evans, Jessica Alba and Julian McMahon star. "

Well, for me, what's cool is the Silver Surfer. What I don't like is the return of Doctor Doom. Well, Doom should be better this time, he was so wrong in the first film. Let's hope the sequel does a better job. I liked the first one if Doom wasn't in it. Will we get to see Galactus in the third sequel? Are trilogies "in" these days?

Civil War Delays Skips Two Months
posted by jepster2006

Delays, delays, sigh. Infinite Crisis had delays but it was only weeks. But you know what the delays of Infinite Crisis didn't seem to be worth it at all. They had too many fill in artists, and the whole feel of the book lost it's quality by issue 4. Issue's 1 to 3 were great, 4-7 where "Okay". Don't get me wrong, I totally digged Infinite Crisis.

Well, according to Marvel, the cause of the delay's were as follows:

“Over the next few weeks, the Civil War proper title and a few of the tie in books that are closely related to the story in the main book will be shipping later than originally planned. In an attempt to accommodate the creative team of Millar and McNiven and keep the artistic integrity and high standards of the event, we will be shifting the following titles:

CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE 11 February 2007

Also, starting in November some Marvel will be branded as “Casualties of War” -- similar to how they branded titles as “Spider-Man Unmasked” and “Road to Civil War”. Those titles are:

In December

In January 2007

“The need for these shifts came about as the September [for November shipping product] Marvel Previews #37 was going to press and we were not able to make adjustments,” reads Marvel’s explanation to retailers. “The December Marvel Previews will reflect the changes and additions. At this point we do not anticipate further changes to the schedule. We apologize for the inconvenience but feel that this is in the best interest of the quality of the event and for retailers to continue to realize the immense sales for these books. We are announcing these shifts early enough in the hopes that retailers can adjust their buying patterns for the next few months. Also, we hope the addition of a few more key Civil War titles will make up for any lost sales that result from these moves.”

Yup, Marvel just skipped Civil War this month and October. All in all, the event ends next year in January. For schedule sensitive pricks, this is a total letdown. (I can hear Marvel haters jumping with joy) But for quality sensitive people, this seems to lay more on the good side. So, what would you rather have? A high quality delayed book, or a multi-artist "cool and okay" book?

Oh, and for those who don't know, Mark Millar is undergoing Crohn's disease treatment for quite sometime now. But really, is it his fault? Personally, I think they should have been done with a lot of the books before announcing the event. It's more of an editorial issue than an artist and writer problem.

By the way, this means one thing too. Your TPB's probably delayed too Jabs.

So, what do you think? Talk it out here!

I don't really know if this is legal or not, but another leaked video from the Comic Con found its way to the internet. This time it's the preview of THE BATMAN series SEASON 4. It featured the new Robin (and yes its Dick Grayson) which, so far seems to have a more detailed origin story for the Boy Wonder as compared to the Bruce Timm/Paul Dini Animated Series. They also showed several new villains to be introduced in the series namely Harely Quinn, Black Mask, Killer Moth, Clayface 2 and Everywhere Man voiced by Brandon Routh!

Yes, Brandon Routh...the guy who played Superman is now doing voice acting gigs. I know then Supes movie didn't do that great in the US box office but good God, voice acting? Well I would give him the benefit of the doubt that he might have taken this project before the Superman thing came. Still it puts an interesting twist on his short career dosen't it?

Anyway, back to the leaked video, it also showed a brief glipmse of Gotham's Future more specifically 2027. I don't really know how this would fit in the show but it looked amazing. They had a crippled Barbara Gordon much like in the current comics continuuity, Dick Grayson in the Nightwing costume and Batman with a very distinct Dark Knight Returns Frank Miller look.

The video was enough make any fanboy wet his pants. Click the link with caution.

For those people who were too cheap to buy the Ultimate Avengers 2 DVD, well, you could just thank Youtube.com for providing you access to the FIRST LOOK features of the DVD which contains video previews of ULTIMATE IRONMAN and Doctor Strange

ULTIMATE IRONMAN hopes to make a more definitive IRONMAN origin story which I do believe has been done in the ULTIMATE IRONMAN mini-series but it would seem most of the people involved in this animation project doesn't recognize it. I don't want to be the guy who puts down the film before it's released but since I didn't like both Ultimate Avengers 1 and 2 films, I feel less than impressed with this feature.

Doctor Strangeon the other hand is a character that I never really had interest in. I bascially know his origin story from the old school MARVEL trading cards and obscure MARVEL PRESENTS issues that I had years back but other than that I got no idea what's his story so far. The FIRST LOOK video to its credit made Doc Strange look interesting enough but again the stigma of having the same production people who handled ULTIMATE AVENGERS doing this made me think twice.

Bottom line is, I would like to see these direct to DVD projects but i'm not really keeping my hopes up since the disappointing ULTIMATE AVENGERS.
